![]() It is old school yet crowded with young artists from all over the city. ![]() Though, many people didn’t realize that this venue actually hosted beat poetry and folk music until 1957, when it became a home for jazz music. The Village Vanguard's iconic red awning, shadowing a small patch of sidewalk on Seventh Avenue, between Perry Street and W 11th Street, on an otherwise unexceptional city block, a beacon. It was first opened by Max Gordon in 1935, making it New York City’s oldest operating jazz club. The Village Vanguard is sensual and rather intoxicating even when drinking only sparkling water. The Village Vanguard is located at Seventh Ave South in the West Village. These solitary experiences were enhanced by having been to the historic venue. February 2020 saw Emmet Cohen and his trio during a stopover trip to NYC from Germany and this was the perfect way to prepare for a long weekend of work.ĭuring the height of Covid, I subscribed to many an online sessions during weekend nights in my midtown Atlanta apartment, grateful to hear live jazz even though not in person.
